Caffeine and L-theanine: what the research covers
NZT-369 Editorial ·
Two everyday compounds
Caffeine occurs naturally in tea, coffee and cocoa. L-Theanine is an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves. Both have been studied for decades, and both appear in everyday diets.
What the research looks at
Published studies on the two ingredients together have examined questions such as how they are dosed relative to one another, how they are measured in a controlled setting, and how consistent the findings are across different groups of people. As with most nutrition research, results vary between studies.
How to read research honestly
- A study of an ingredient is not a study of a finished product.
- Findings from one group or one design do not automatically generalise.
- Observing an effect in a laboratory setting is different from everyday use.
- Population research describes averages, not individuals.
What this note is not
